What this site does

This site answers one deceptively simple question: what do everyday things cost in Bitcoin?

Most Bitcoin calculators convert a number into another number. That tells you very little. Knowing that 0.000025 BTC equals $2.50 is abstract. Knowing that a loaf of bread costs 2,500 satoshis is something you can actually feel — and remember.

So instead of an empty input box, this converter starts with a shopping list: bread, milk, coffee, eggs, a Big Mac, a tank of gas, a Netflix subscription. Every item is priced live in Bitcoin and in satoshis. You can edit any price to match your own local shop, add your own items, and switch between dollars and euros.

Why it exists

Bitcoin is usually discussed as an investment — a price chart going up or down. That framing hides something more interesting: Bitcoin is also a unit of account. When you start pricing ordinary purchases in satoshis, you begin to see purchasing power rather than exchange rates.

A coffee that cost 25,000 sats a few years ago and costs 3,800 sats today tells a story that a dollar price never will. This site exists to make that story visible to anyone, in a few seconds, without signing up for anything.

How the numbers are calculated

The maths is intentionally simple and fully transparent:

• The item's price is divided by the current Bitcoin price in the same currency.
• That result is the amount in BTC. Multiplied by 100,000,000 it becomes satoshis.
• Example: a $2.50 loaf of bread at a $100,000 BTC price is 0.000025 BTC, or 2,500 sats.

Internally every item price is stored in one base currency, so the satoshi figure stays correct whichever fiat currency you choose to display. Switching from dollars to euros changes the price label — not the number of sats.

Where the live price comes from

Relying on a single price API means a single point of failure. This page asks five independent public sources at the same time — CoinGecko, Coinbase, Kraken, Bitstamp and Blockchain.info — and uses whichever responds first. If one is down or rate-limiting, you will not notice. If all five are unreachable, you can enter a price manually and everything keeps working.

Who is behind it

Satmeter is built and maintained by Johan Demmers, an independent developer based in the Netherlands. It is a personal project rather than a company, and it is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by any exchange, wallet provider, or price data provider mentioned on the site.

I am not a financial adviser and hold no licence to give investment advice. I built this because pricing ordinary things in satoshis turned out to be a genuinely useful way to think about money, and no existing tool did it with everyday groceries. Everything on the site reflects my own reading of public data, and where I am uncertain I say so on the page rather than papering over it.
